A Sandy Grave

A Sandy Grave

The anticipation of summer vacation can put anyone in a great mood with the excitement of adventures to be had–especially at the beach. But what is a group of friends to do when they discover mysterious men poaching whale teeth at the beach?

EXCERPT:

The lifeguards had their arms extended and attempted to move the crowd back. The tallest lifeguard said, “People, please stay back. The authorities will arrive to examine the whale to determine the cause of death within the hour. The whale must have died at sea and washed ashore.”

Q. You are an award-winning children’s author, how have you seen your writing evolve over the years?

My writing has become tighter with a smoother flow to the words, bringing all the five senses into play.

Q. What inspired you to become a children’s author?

After working in Fortune 500 companies for many years, I was longing for something more creative. One day I stumbled upon the Institute of Children’s Literature aptitude test, luckily I was accepted into the program, and I haven’t looked back since.

Q. What have illustrations brought to your stories?

I’ve been lucky with the two illustrators for my books where they both have brought their own style and research to each of my stories making the story leap from the pages.

Q. What do you look for in an illustrator?

An illustrator that will stay true to story line.

Q. What are two or three things beginning children’s writers must know?

Writing for children is not simple. Writing down to your reader is a big no. Know your subject matter. Luckily for the most part children are curious and know when the “wool is being pulled over their eyes.”

Q. You do author visits, how can interested parties get in touch with you?

Those interested can email me directly at donna@donnamcdine.com and visit www.donnamcdine.com/schoollibraryvisits.html to review my author visit programs.
